Industrial production statistics Statistics Explained

what is industrial production

The Industrial Revolution increased the overall amount of wealth and distributed it more widely than had been the case in earlier centuries, helping to enlarge the middle class. Their miserable conditions gave rise to the trade union movement in the mid-19th century. The monthly Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization report provides a comprehensive view of the manufacturing side of the economy.

Before data collection could begin, it was necessary to draw up a common list of products to be covered. Industrial production statistics collected within PRODCOM serves as one of the data sources used in several policy areas of the European Commission and national administrations. Other users such as professional/trade associations and their members use PRODCOM statistics for information on industry.

Despite its name the industrial production index is not intended to measure production but should – in theory – reflect the development of value added in the different branches of industry. This means that the inputs obtained by one branch from another must be deducted from its gross output. In this way double counting of production is prevented and the degree of vertical integration of branches should not influence the results for the indicator. Large industrial organizations have traditionally focused on excellence in processes, often for the mass market, such as cars rolling off an assembly line. What’s left is increasingly nonstandard, yet most industrial organizations aren’t structured for nonstandard work—leaving them unable to change at the pace innovation requires. The Industrial Revolution transformed economies that had been based on agriculture and handicrafts into economies based on large-scale industry, mechanized manufacturing, and the factory system.

Note in figure 1 that capacity utilization (red line) dropped dramatically in both 2008 and 2020, times of recession when manufacturers responded to falling demand by shutting down factories and energy production either temporarily or permanently. PCBs were produced by a number of companies, at production plants in a number of industrialized countries. Each company used their own names for the mixtures they marketed, so there are a great number of trade names for PCB-containing commercial products, the most well known being Aroclor, Clophen, Kanechlor, and Phenoclor. The use of PCBs was overwhelmingly concentrated in industrial countries, meaning that use was concentrated in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere where most industrial regions are situated. Since the world is not hierarchical, network databases that could accommodate more complex network relationships began to appear.

  1. In practice, however, it is difficult to collect value-added data on a monthly basis.
  2. The production surveyed covers only the production actually carried out on the territory of the reporting country.
  3. The EU’s industrial production in 2021 recovered and it increased by 8.5% compared with 2020.
  4. This process began in Britain in the 18th century and from there spread to other parts of the world.

The total value of sold production created by the production of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers in 2023 was €773 billion; this value represented 13% of the total value of sold EU production. In 2023, the value of sold production for this manufacturing sector increased by 22% compared with 2022. The production of motor vehicles accounted for approximately €447 billion, which was more than half of the value of sold production of this group. The rest of the sold production in this activity was the production of other parts and accessories, bodies (coachwork), electrical and electronic equipment for motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (Figure 5). Industrial production measures the output of the industrial sector, which typically comprises mining, manufacturing, utilities and, in some cases, construction.

Educating and informing the workers and the labor force about the principles and the advantages of CE it is also of paramount importance, as well as creating incentives to promote its use. This education and information service can be done at the local level, but may be initiated globally, with CE education programs developed by international agencies and implemented locally, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) (United Nations, 2016). Local policy makers can aid by subscribing to the SDGs and facilitating the implementation of initiatives towards achieving the setting goals (Dziedzic et al., 2022). Since industrial production of PCBs began in 1929 it is estimated that approximately 1.2–1.5 million metric tonnes have been produced. Production peaked in the late 1960s, and ended in most countries in the 1970s and 1980s. However, it is not certain whether production has completely ceased in all countries, even in 2006.

Series are pre-adjusted for the effects of holidays or thebusiness cycle when appropriate. For the data since 1972, all seasonallyadjusted aggregate indexes are calculated by aggregating the seasonallyadjusted indexes of the individual series. Additional documentation and X-13 specifications can be found on the Board’s website at/releases/G17/About.htm. As automation and gen AI take over more tasks, human work increasingly centers on the sorts of “special projects” that once accounted for only a small share—perhaps 20 percent—of day-to-day work. Yet governance still consists of heavy layers of (functional) processes on top of project management, yielding convoluted, slow, and resource-intensive decision making.

Data are available during the year following the reference year, with the first release of information usually taking place in July. As more complete and revised data become available, updates are released on a monthly basis. The production under sub-contracted operations within the economic territory of the European Union Member States, available since 2021, amounts to 3% of the production value and 8% of the production volume. The published percent changes are calculated from unroundedindexes, and may not be the same as percent changes calculated from therounded indexes shown in the release. Most affected by the Covid-19 crisis were capital goods and durable consumer goods, in particular machinery and equipment (-12.5 %) and motor vehicles (-19.5 %). In the main industrial grouping of non-durable consumer goods leather products (-26.1 %) and wearing apparel (-24.6 %) decreased massively. The source bonds meaning in finance data is varied, including physical inputs and outputs such as tons of steel; inflation-adjusted sales figures; and, in some cases, hours logged by production workers. The FRB obtains this data from industry associations and government agencies and aggregates them into an index using the Fisher-ideal formula.

In figure 1, base industrial production (blue line) is measured from the 2017 level (100 on the y-axis), with anything above showing growth from that year and anything below showing contraction. The big drop in early 2020 reflects the impact of the COVID-19-related economic shutdown. Global industrial production uses and produces a vast amount https://www.1investing.in/ of potentially hazardous substances and materials. Around 10 billion tons of oil equivalents are extracted, transported and stored for the purposes of energy production only; this mass is commeasurable to arsenals of nuclear weapons. The introduction of new technologies does not decrease the levels of technogenic environmental dangers.
